Best Practice, Compliance, Planning, Change Management...
GOVERNANCE AND COMPLIANCE
SITUATION: We’re a small company attempting to gain contract work – mainly government –but to do this we have to structure our business to meet ‘Best Practice’ to get to the level playing field. We need a Strategic Plan and a Business Management System. GOAL: Compliance with contract / tendering requirements opening up opportunities to win significant, valuable contract work. ABC Pty Ltd – We are located in a regional NSW city and have a small but good team who deliver our services to the building and housing sectors. While we have a reasonable flow of work, it is mainly short-term, making long-term planning difficult. While we are good at what we do in the field, we know our business would improve if we could become more efficient and structured. WSA: The first consultation (up to an hour) is no charge / no obligation. An outline profile of the business is developed, as well as the owner’s ambitions and objectives. A process to move ahead is agreed to. WSA conducts a business review that canvasses all aspects of the enterprise in its present state providing a formal scope for the project. Then an industry standard compliant Business Management System – policies, procedures, work instructions, operations manuals etc. – is developed. This can lead to full ANZ/ISO accreditation if needed. WSA has the resources to take ABC Pty Ltd through the entire process. Most importantly, the Business Management System is built in collaboration with the owners and their team. The next phase is implementing the BMS so that it becomes an effective tool. A Strategic Plan is developed to provide ABC Pty Ltd with a map – an organised, review-driven pathway to achieve short, medium and long-term goals. It is important to keep in mind the adage- ‘failing to plan is planning to fail!’ OUTCOME: ABC Pty Ltd used its new systems-based approach to make their operation more efficient and cost effective –and achieved their objective through being able to demonstrate compliance and won a long-term large contract. |
BUSINESS WELL ESTABLISHED – TIME FOR A CHANGE?
SITUATION: We started a successful business quite a few years ago and have watched it grow – more turnover, well positioned in the market, now quite a few employees. BUT! We’re working harder, longer hours, with little extra reward. We seem to be ‘directionless’ – where to next? GOAL: Better performing / rewarding business outcomes with an ‘escape plan’. XJ Pty Ltd - Our business is in a large coastal regional city where even though we have strong competition, we have worked and built a solid enterprise, now with a team of staff and employees. 'We just seem to be drifting along without any real plan for the business’s – or our – future. We just don’t seem to have any goals anymore'. WSA: The first consultation (up to an hour) is no charge / no obligation. This process will result in a ’snapshot evaluation’, a business profile that outlines the state of the business, options, and the owner’s succession plan. ‘Working smarter – not harder’. The directors of XJ Pty Ltd made a decision to go ahead with a structured business change process, reviewing all aspects of business operation and dynamics – both internal and external. The critical value WSA delivers is seeing the enterprise through ‘detached’ experienced eyes, away from the natural emotional connection every successful business operator has with their business. A business review process will ‘re-map’ business direction, roles and responsibilities. Most successful businesses start with a well-structured business plan; it is however a fact that businesses at the 5 year plus point indeed have no plan – but just ‘go with the flow’. The assignment typically spans 6 weeks to 6 months where business services, support and mentoring is provided through structured face-to-face meetings, telephone and email support. Many clients say mentoring is the most important part of the process! A personal strategic / succession plan is developed with the business owners. OUTCOME: XJ Pty Ltd Directors adopted ‘change management’ options canvassed in the review; they are rewarding themselves (not everyone else) and are looking forward to a succession transition which will give them the opportunity (after a well-deserved break) to explore exciting new horizons. |
